Sparky question - House circuit 1 or 2?
|
Hi all you amazing electricians, I was looking into buying this TP-Link TL-WPA4220KIT 2-Port Powerline Adapter or something similar but many Wired extenders with an Ethernet port for a wired connection say "...products need to be connected to the same electrical circuit and must be deploy in sets of two or more."
How can I tell if my house has one circuit or 2? or If I'm connecting the Adapter to the 'same' cicrcuit? I'm in a normal ground floor, 1st floor, terraced house in East London. Only one fuse box in the cellar staircase. Thanks, any and all advice (serious and sarcastic) appreciated

I'm no electrician but I'm willing to bet all your plug sockets are on the same circuit, in any case, try it and see what happens

Does your fuse box have helpful labels for each type of electrical use, such as lights, cooker, washing machine, sockets etc? That may help, if there are one or two marked sockets.
For what it's worth, when i put power line adapters in a couple of years ago, I was unaware of circuit one or two. Internet comes in downstairs, power line adapter there and at desktop upstairs. Works fine.
Be very surprised, if what Far Cough says, isn't true.

Even in my old house which was a big five bedroom job all the sockets were on a single circuit.

The ring main if i remember can have unlimited sockets and then you have your lighting circuit which is totally separate

In your house everything comes off the Sam phase, the phase that supplies your consumer unit with 240v ac.
So just plug in where you like because it’s all supplied in common through your consumer unit.

What a Div. Your circuit is single-phase. It doesn't matter at all "where the internet comes in" as was said below, as you plug the router into the nearest powerline adaptor and use an Ethernet connection out the other side or use it as a Wi-Fi transmission point.
Don't overthink it, just plug the to two fuckers in and press the button on it. Job done.
Now fuck off

I just use trial and error, making sure first there's no buckets of water nearby.

Uncle Gank used to just sort your problems, now he sorts them AND tells you to fuck off for free.

Correct in saying that the OP is overthinking the issue but to give Darth a modicum of credit he's probably a bit more.on the ball than some of the illiterate around the house new breed of twats that seem to have been born from about 1985 onwards.
My neighbour asked for my help to show him how to disconnect his washing machine a few months back as it needed to be moved prior to getting a new floor put in.
Thick cunt.

Many older houses were wired by incompetent electricians - I used to live in a house where the red covered wires were neutral and the black covered ones were live, the reverse of what they were supposed to be when the house was built.
I wouldn't be at all surprised if some houses out there had circuits with different phases, and not necessarily neatly divided with one phase for sockets and the other for lighting.
The older the house, if it hasn't been rewired, the more likely it is to have odd wiring arrangements.

Glad it has been explained to me. My house has seperate circuits upstairs and downstairs but the powerline adaptors still worked which confused me. Now I know why.

My virgin media router is under stairs. Home plugs plugged in and work two floors up no problem in loft extn. Doubt very much your have an issue unless you have an annexe on its own consumer unit or a house split in two for a rental.

Wtf is a power line adapter?
Adapts electrical wiring socket to socket, so it can carry internet signal.
So you can can have the internet on hard wired basis, rather than wireless. Less degradation of internet speed.
